DVOŘÁK Serenade for Winds in D minor
WALKER Lyric for Strings
HAYDN Symphony No. 45 in F-sharp minor, “Farewell”

Dvořák’s Serenade for Winds in D minor evokes the old-world atmosphere of music performed in the courts of the Rococo period. The first African-American to win the Pulitzer Prize, George Walker’s Lyric for Strings blends lush harmonies with stark solo passages to create a dramatic and moving composition. Haydn’s “Farewell” Symphony concludes the program, a composition written as an appeal from court musicians to return their loved ones, with a surprising ending you don’t want to miss!
