Rochester, NY – The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) announces that Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik’s contract has been renewed for another three seasons (2016/17, 2017/18, and 2018/19), which will take him through his 25th season with the orchestra.
“I have always been inspired to do my best as a conductor, arranger, composer and producer of our pops season, and I’m honored and excited to continue with my beloved Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra,” says Maestro Tyzik, who also serves as Principal Pops Conductor for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Seattle, Detroit and Oregon Symphonies, and the Florida Orchestra. “This orchestra is on an artistic upswing, and I look forward to collaborating with my friends, Ward Stare and Michael Butterman, as we work together to keep the RPO a strong and essential artistic pillar of the Rochester community.”
A Grammy Award winner for his work with trumpeter Doc Severinsen, Tyzik is one of America’s most innovative and sought-after pops conductors, recognized for his brilliant arrangements, original programming, and engaging rapport with audiences of all ages. He has written more than 200 arrangements, orchestrations and compositions for the RPO. This May, he will premiere a new violin concerto written for RPO Concertmaster Juliana Athayde on the Philharmonics Series (May 5 & 7, 2016).
Tyzik opened the 2015/16 Pops Series – sponsored by Canandaigua National Bank & Trust and Fibertech Networks – on September 11 & 12 with An Evening with Megan Hilty, and will conduct its second program as well on Friday and Saturday, October 23 & 24 at 8 p.m. in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre: Disney in Concert: Tale as Old as Time. Incorporating live music with big-screen video from favorite Disney films old and new, the orchestra and guest vocalists Lisa Livesay, Whitney Claire Kaufman, Andrew Johnson and Aaron Phillips will bring favorite movie memories to life. Tickets start at $22.
Principal Conductor for Education and Engagement Michael Butterman (The Louise and Henry Epstein Family Chair) opens the 2015/16 Sunday Matinee Series on Sunday, October 25 at 2 p.m. at the Performance Hall at Hochstein with Brahms & Haydn. Four RPO soloists will be featured: Concertmaster Juliana Athayde (The Caroline W. Gannett & Clayla Ward Chair), cellist Lars Kirvan, Principal Oboe Erik Behr (The Dr. Jacques M. Lipson Chair) and Principal Bassoon Matthew McDonald (The Ron and Donna Fielding Chair). The program includes Brahms’ Variations on a Theme of Haydn, Haydn’s Sinfonia Concertante, and Brahms’ Serenade No. 2. Tickets are $25/$10 students.
October closes with the RPO’s first Special Concert of the 2015/16 season: Distant Worlds: Music from Final Fantasy on Thursday, October 29 at 7:30 p.m. in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre. For one night only, Rochester will experience the entertainment phenomenon that has thrilled audiences all over the world. Led by Grammy Award-winning conductor Arnie Roth, with vocalist Susan Calloway and guest chorus Madrigalia, the program features Japanese video game composer Nobuo Uematsu’s music from all 14 games and an HD video presentation of exclusive content from game developers SQUARE ENIX. The concert’s promotional partner is The Strong National Museum of Play’s International Center for the History of Electronic Games. Tickets start at $22.
