Mambo Kings Add Zing to Tyzik’s RPO CMAC Concert
Rochester/Canandaigua, NY – This summer, Rochesterians don’t have to travel south of the border to hear the hottest Latin music. On Saturday, July 19 at 7:30 p.m., the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra turns up the heat with a caliente evening at Canandaigua’s Constellation Brands – Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center (CMAC) for the second installment in its Constellation Brands Summer Series. With Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik and Rochester’s dynamic Mambo Kings, “Mambo!” takes the audience through an evening of fiery Afro-Cuban and Latin jazz charts that will have everyone, from the novice to skilled salsero, dancing in the aisles. Pre-concert activities from 6-7:15 p.m. get kids in the mood to mambo, making bottle top castanets and learning salsa rhythms.
A piquant blend of Latin classics – like “Mambo” from West Side Story and legendary Tito Puente’s Oye Como Va – and original charts by Mambo Kings’ Richard DeLaney are sure to scorch and sizzle on the CMAC stage. Music by Astor Piazzolla and Dave Brubeck cool things down, but pulses race again with Guillermo Castillo’s Tres Lindas Cubanas and Rafael Hernandez’s El Cumbanchero. The night even includes DeLaney’s Latin-inspired arrangement of Lennon and McCartney’s 1965 Beatles hit Day Tripper, as well as Mambo Kings in solo spotlights.
Mambo Kings, founded by DeLaney in 1995, is Rochester’s leading Latin jazz ensemble, with an ideal blend of piano, saxophone, percussion and bass. Since its 1997 debut with the RPO, the group has earned national acclaim for its blistering Latin rhythms and brilliant jazz improvisations. Mambo Kings has excited audiences throughout North America both as featured soloists with acclaimed orchestras and in music festivals including the Rochester International Jazz Festival. “This is vital Latin jazz that is cooking,” raved All About Jazz.
A variety of ticket options are available. Advance single ticket prices range from $13-$50; single tickets purchased at the gate range from $18-$60. Discounts are available for senior citizens, students and children 12 and under in the shell. New this summer: lawn seats are free for children 12 and under. Subscription packages are available through July 11 at www.rpo.org or at the RPO Box Office. CMAC tickets are not available at Wegmans. Tickets also are available through Ticketmaster and its outlets; additional fees may apply.
CMAC concerts take place rain or shine; except for lawn seating, all other seats are covered.
