Rochester, N.Y., Feb. 21, 2006 – RPO Principal Flute Rebecca Gilbert (The Charlotte Whitney Allen Chair) joins conductor Christopher Seaman and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra on Thursday, March 9 and Saturday, March 11 at 8 p.m. in the Eastman Theatre for an evening of moving music. Of a past performance, Democrat and Chronicle Music Critic John Pitcher noted, “Gilbert is a serious, sensitive and stylish musician, and she possesses a technique that is seemingly capable of overcoming all difficulties.” The program, which includes Mozart’s Flute Concerto No. 1 and Bruckner’s Symphony No. 8, is described by Mr. Seaman as “a big occasion!” He hosts the Pre-concert Chat at 7 p.m. each evening.
The Orchestra is celebrating the 250th birthday of Wolfgang Amadè Mozart this season with six Philharmonics Series concerts and six Symphony 101 concerts featuring his music. This Music That Moves You concert features Ms. Gilbert’s performance of Mozart’s Flute Concerto No. 1, an effortless and delightful piece that explores the flute’s warm, expressive capabilities. Mr. Seaman says, “Rebecca has been with the RPO for ten years, but we still do not take for granted her wonderful sound and artistry, which add so much to our concerts.”
Bruckner’s Symphony No. 8, premiered by Hans Richter in 1892, brought the composer the greatest acclaim of his life. Composer Hugo Wolf, after attending the performance, likened it to “a triumph that a Roman general could not have wished to be more splendid. This symphony is the creation of a giant, and in its spiritual dimension, richness and greatness it surpasses all of the Master’s other symphonies.”
Tickets for these performances are $22-$52, available online 24/7 at www.rpo.org, by phone (454-2100) and in person from the RPO Box Office, and at all Wegmans Video Departments. RPO Box Office Hours are Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. (non-concert Saturdays, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.). The Wegmans Video Department is open seven days a week, 10:30 a.m.-9 p.m. A convenience fee may apply.
