Recognized worldwide as one of the premier double-bass performers and teachers, James VanDemark — Professor Emeritus of Double Bass at the Eastman School of Music — has also received considerable acclaim for his role as a narrator with orchestra. In addition to many appearances with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, VanDemark has also appeared as narrator of Peter and the Wolf at the request of violin virtuoso Midori in an all-Prokofiev program at the Atlantic Music Festival. In 2019, VanDemark was commissioned by Solti Conducting Fellow Yaniv Dinur to update Peter and the Wolf as a comic work for adults. For 20 years, VanDemark has hosted and narrated the annual Young Persons Concert with the Texas Festival Orchestra at the Festival Institute at Round Top, has appeared at the Rochester Fringe Festival, and made numerous other appearances with orchestras and chamber music groups throughout the country.
