Troll-pack, won’t you come here to sleep in our arms?” Peer Gynt asks the girls, “Who are you calling?” They answer “To the trolls!” They continue: “Trond! Be tender! Trond! Be rough! The beds in the hut are all standing empty! Rough is tender! And tender is rough! Missing your boy means loving a troll!” Peer Gynt asks “Where are the boys then?” The Shepard girls laugh. “They’re much too busy!” The first girl says “My boy was so handsome and caring a fellow. Now, he’s gone and married a middle-aged widow!” The second sings “Mine went to the North and met up with a gypsy. Now, they’ll be tramping the roads like tipsy!” The 3rd sings “Mine, he killed our little bastard! Now, they’ve got his head on a stake well-plastered!” The girls call out to the trolls again and Peer Gynt answers “I’m a troll with three heads, just the guy for you girls!” They ask, “Are you man enough?” and he answers “You be the judge!” The girls say “To the hut! We have drink! Let it run free! This is Saturday night, not a bed will be empty! Like red-hotted irons he glows and sputters like glittering trout in blackest water!” They call out one more time to the trolls. Peer Gynt says “My soul is dead but my lust is hot. Smiles on my face. Tears in my thoughts!”

INTERMISSION
Act Two
- 13: Early Morning
- 15: Arabian Dance
- The choir sings “Oh the Prophet is come! Sound the flute and the drum! The Prophet with sacred vision to us over oceans of sand he has ridden. The Prophet with wisdom never failing to us over oceans of sand he came sailing. Start the fluting and the drumming! Oh the Prophet, he is coming!”
- Anitra sings “His charger is white as the milk that flows in the river of Paradise. Bend every knee, bow every head, his eyes are stars, shining and mild. No child of the earth can endure that light of lights shining forth. Through the desert he came riding, Gold and Pearls hung on his breast. Where e’er he rode there was light but as he passed came the drought and darkness. He, the glorious one, came across desert sands like a mortal man. The Kaaba stands empty, he himself has proclaimed it.”
- And the choir repeats “Oh the Prophet is come!…”

- 19: The Storm
- 20: Solveig’s Hymn
- Solveig sings “All is made ready for Whitsuntide. My dearest lad, you’re so far away! Your burden is great and time passes by. I’ll wait as I promised you.”
- 21: Night Scene
- The choir vocalizes Peer’s thoughts “We are thoughts. You should have formed us. Feet to dance with you should have given us. We should have soared like children’s voices but here we are rolling like balls of thread. We are trumpet calls. You should have sounded us. See how your sloth has shriveled and withered us. The Worm has gnawed, through every fibre. We never harvested the ripening fruit. We are song. You should have sung us. Thousand times, you stifled and strangled us. In the depths of your Heart, we have lain and waited. We were never summoned. Now we are your poison. We are tears, you never wept us. We might have melted the cankering ice spears and now they fester down deep in your breast, but the wounds have grown over. Our Power is gone. We are Deeds you left undone. That strangler Doubt has broken and crippled us! On Judgment Day we all shall be there to testify. Beware. Be damned!”
- 22: Pentecost Hymn
- Choir sings “O blessed Morn, when God’s Word came to earth, Came down in tongues of flame! Since that Holy day, his heirs have sung “All praise God’s glorious name.”
- 23: Solveig’s Lullaby — **Small scene with Peer and Solveig*
- Solveig sings “Sleep, O sleep, my dearest boy, I will cradle you, I will guard you. Child, you have nestled on your Mother’s knee; We two have played all the livelong day. Child you have lingered at your Mother’s breast all the livelong day, God bless you, my joy. Child I have held you close upon my heart all the livelong day. You’re wearying now. Sleep, O sleep, dearest son of mine. Sleep! I will cradle you. I will guard you.” Solveig continues singing her lullaby as the choir repeats the Pentecost Hymn together.
