A spectacular conclusion to an amazing Centennial Season celebration! Hear, live in concert, the epic power and timeless message of humanity and brotherhood when Music Director Andreas Delfs leads your RPO, Rochester Oratorio Society, and soloists in Beethoven’s inspiring and monumental “Ode to Joy,” The Ninth Symphony. “All men become brothers.” And, for composer Derrick Skye, all music becomes one as he fuses diverse cultures into a colorful, new companion work, commissioned by the RPO for its 100th season.
RPO HISTORY:
Your RPO has performed one Derrick Skye composition prior to this concert: the world premiere of A Rage of Peace November 17-19, 2022 with Andreas Delfs conducting.
Your RPO has performed Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony 12 times in a Philharmonics Series or Sunday Matinee concert between 1935-2017.
- Guy Fraser Harrison conducted the piece on March 7, 1935 with Emily Roosevelt (soprano), Lillian Knowles (contralto), Dan Gridley (tenor), and Herbert Gould (bass).
- Bob Bernhardt conducted the piece October 5-7, 1995 with the Rochester Oratorio Society and Carmen Pelton (soprano), Victoria Livengood (mezzo soprano), Mark Rehnstron (tenor), and Thomas Woodman (baritone).
- Christopher Seaman conducted the piece on October 11, 2009 with the Rochester Oratorio Society and Jami Tyzik (soprano), Barbara Shirvis (soprano), Charles Reid (tenor), and Kevin Deas (bass).
- Ward Stare last conducted the piece November 16-18, 2017 with the Eastman-Rochester Chorus.
