Jeff Tyzik & RPO Celebrate Wegmans’ Centennial
Tyzik’s “Honor” will premiere at Ontario Beach July 6

Rochester, NY – The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) will debut Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik’s “Honor,” a composition written to celebrate Wegmans Food Markets’ 100th anniversary this year, on Wednesday, July 6 at this year’s RPO at Ontario Beach concert. The free 7:30 p.m. concert is part of the Concerts by the Shore series, sponsored by Wegmans, Monroe County and the Ontario Beach Park Program Committee (OBPPC), and will be conducted by RPO Music Director Ward Stare. The program will feature American and patriotic music, including Tyzik’s popular Armed Forces Salute.

“The Wegman family has contributed so much to the Rochester community through their generosity and support of numerous programs that are of great benefit to our region,” said Tyzik. “I chose the title because it sums up how I feel about this opportunity to celebrate Wegmans and recognize them for all they’ve done to ‘give their best’ to the Rochester community over the past 100 years.

The four-minute piece starts with a slow statement of the main theme followed by an energetic fanfare. The fanfare transitions into a driving rhythm with the main theme flowing over this rhythmic base. Then, the fanfare returns with a flourish and an exciting ending.

“Partnering with the RPO for the past 20 years has been a privilege,” said Mary Ellen Burris, Wegmans senior vice president of consumer affairs. “Together, our efforts have made Rochester a better place to live and we are flattered to be recognized with this gift of music from Jeff and the RPO.”

“Honor” will be played again at various other RPO concerts this summer, as well as at Wegmans’ annual, private Gala Holiday Pops with Jeff Tyzik in December. The RPO will celebrate its centennial in 2022.
