2012–13 Philharmonics Series Repertoire Changes
All Guest Artists, Commissioned Works Remain on Series
Eastman Young Artists Piano Competition Winner Leonardo Colafelice to Join RPO in Philharmonics Finale May 30 and June 2
The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) has made changes to the repertoire it will perform on its Philharmonics Series during the upcoming 2012–13 season. Other series, including Pops, Sunday Matinees with Arild, and orKIDStra are not affected.
The RPO is also pleased to announce that it is adding another soloist to its list of celebrated and talented guest artists: on May 30 and June 2, 2013, Leonardo Colafelice—the 16-year-old from Italy who won the 2012 Eastman Young Artists International Piano Competition in August—will perform Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with the orchestra, conducted by Music Director Arild Remmereit.
All previously announced guest soloists and conductors are scheduled to appear, and both new, commissioned works—Jeff Tyzik’s Images: Musical Impressions of an Art Museum, commissioned by Bob and Joanne Gianniny to commemorate the 100th anniversary of The Memorial Art Gallery, and Karen Tanaka’s new work commissioned by the RPO—remain on the series.
With these selective repertoire changes, the RPO replaces previously scheduled works with substantive, quality music that is more cost effective to produce, helping the orchestra to achieve a balanced budget in 2012–13 without sacrificing the artistic quality Rochester audiences have come to expect.

October 25 and 27, 2012
Debussy at 150 │ Matthias Bamert, guest conductor; Stefan Arnold, piano
Franck’s Symphony in D Minor replaces Brahms’s Piano Quartet in G Minor, Op. 23 (arr. Schoenberg). Debussy’s Petite Suite and Fantaisie for Piano and Orchestra remain.
November 15 and 17, 2012
Tchaikovsky’s “Pathétique” │ Arild Remmereit, conductor; piano soloist from the Eastman School of Music
Mussorgsky’s Introduction to Khovanshchina (orch. Rimsky-Korsakov) replaces Peter Mennin’s Folk Overture. Beach’s Piano Concerto and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6, “Pathétique,” remain.
December 13 and 15, 2012
The Four Seasons │ JoAnn Falletta, guest conductor; Juliana Athayde, violin
Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4, “Italian,” replaces Respighi’s Church Windows. Puccini’s Capriccio sinfonico and Vivaldi’s Four Seasons remain.
January 24 and 26, 2013
Mozart and More │ Arild Remmereit, conductor; Mark Kellogg, trombone
The RPO will not perform Margaret Brouwer’s Pulse. All other repertoire remains unchanged. Jennifer Higdon’s Machine, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1, Lars-Erik Larsson’s Concertino for Trombone, and Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 remain.
February 28 and March 2, 2013
Exquisite Puccini │ Arild Remmereit, conductor; Vocal soloists from the Eastman School of Music
Handel’s Concerto Grosso, Op. 6, No. 5 in D Major replaces Respighi’s La boutique fantasque. Rossini’s La gazza ladra Overture and Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi remain.
March 7 and 9, 2013
Conductor Laureate Christopher Seaman │ Christopher Seaman, guest conductor; William Wolfram, piano
Dvořák’s Slavonic Dances, Op. 46, No. 1; Op. 72, Nos. 2 and 7, replaces Brahms’s Academic Festival Overture. Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and Schubert’s Symphony No. 9, “Great,” remain.
March 21 and 23, 2013
Romantic Dvořák │ Andreas Delfs, guest conductor; Anna Steltenpohl, English horn
The RPO will replace Wagenaar’s Cyrano de Bergerac Overture with a piece to be named later. Persichetti’s Concerto for English Horn and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 remain.

NEXUS and the RPO │ Arild Remmereit, conductor; NEXUS, percussion ensemble
Excerpts from Bizet’s Carmen replace Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé Suite No. 2. Takemitsu’s From Me Flows What You Call Time, L. Boulanger’s D’un matin de printemps, and the new commissioned work by Karen Tanaka remain.
May 30 and June 1, 2013
Rite of Spring: 100 Years │ Arild Remmereit, conductor; Leonardo Colafelice, piano
Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3, performed by Leonardo Colafelice, replaces Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra. Barbara Kolb’s All in Good Time and Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring remain.
