Women’s Philharmonic Advocacy to Present Arild Remmereit and Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra with First-Ever Amy Award for Excellence in Orchestral Programming

ROCHESTER, NY – The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) and Music Director Arild Remmereit will be presented with the first-ever Amy Award for Excellence in Orchestral Programming by Women’s Philharmonic Advocacy (WPA) for their commitment to programming works by women composers.
The Women’s Philharmonic Advocacy was founded in 2008 to promote the performance of women composers by orchestras and ensembles. It took notice of the RPO’s commitment to programming these works when Remmereit’s inaugural season was announced in March 2010. In 2011–12, the Orchestra featured eight works by women composers, including Amy Beach’s “Gaelic” Symphony, Peggy Stuart Coolidge’s Blue Planet, Karen Tanaka’s Rose Absolute, and a newly-commissioned piece by Margaret Brouwer, Caution Ahead – Guard Rail Out.
Sarah Baer of Women’s Philharmonic Advocacy wrote, “Remmereit has created a fantastic season including a more diverse representation of women’s work through history and nationalities than likely has ever been seen in a professional orchestra’s programming.”
WPA President Liane Curtis added, “Our goal is to encourage orchestras to discover music by women and include it in their repertoire. We hope that Remmereit’s work with the RPO will be a model for ensembles across the country.”
