Hosted by the Rochester Philharmonic League since 1955, the Young Artist Auditions is the region’s most prestigious competition for high school-age musicians, recognizing talent and dedication in Male Vocal, Female Vocal, Strings, Piano, and Instrumental categories.

Apply by Jan 31, 2026

For young musicians in grades 10-12 who reside or study music in one of these New York State counties: Monroe, Cayuga, Chemung, Genesee, Livingston, Onondaga, Orleans, Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tomkins, Wayne, Wyoming, or Yates.

AWARDS AND REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS

INSTRUMENTAL AWARDS

Ruth and Sidney Salzman Award for Strings

Helen and George Greer Award for Instrumentalists (Brass, Woodwinds, Percussion, Harp, Guitar)

Mildred and Julius Ness Award for Piano

- One composition for solo instrument and orchestra (memorization is encouraged but not required).

- One contrasting piece (solo or collaborative).

- 15-minute-maximum audition time.

 

VOCAL AWARDS

Nobel Hirsh Award for Male Vocalists

Tessa Martin Award for Female Vocalists

- Three contrasting songs in their original language (all music must be memorized).

- 15-minute-maximum audition time.

 

FINAL ROUND AUDITIONS

for winners and runners-up from the first-round auditions

Aldridge-Tinker Scholarship for Instrumentalists

Jan DeGaetani Scholarship for Vocalists

 

GRAND PRIZE

One candidate will be selected in the Final Round for the opportunity to perform in concert with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.
